Hydra / Sunset

Dusk to Nightfall
Hydra Island, Greece

It is only a short walk from the house to the olive tree that overlooks the Aegean Sea.

The road has a gentle wind and if you are not careful the drop can be steep. In the most dangerous places you feel that you are walking on air. There is not a safety rail that separates the elevated path from the sea below. There are no interruptions to the vista. The walk to the olive tree is an easy one, and once you reach it there is a slight extension where you can sit down and look at the mountain range across the sea. I like taking the path every morning when I am here. It seems that it was made for the sole purpose of sitting below the olive tree. Close to sunset, there are no other lights to interrupt the blue. The lights of the house are hidden from sight behind the gentle bends of the path. There are moments where time seems to stop completely here. As the light is fading slowly few things matter and none matters enough for the night arriving. Sometimes there are cicadas on the tree – the only sound around. Nightfall comes slowly.
